The press release states that the page count and price per book are "going to stay comensurate with current market prices."

Thus they are being very honest abou the fact that this is a blatant money grab...

"Hi, we are putting out a new edition. There is nothing wrong with the old edition, we just feel the need to print new books and charge you $40 each for them... Oh by the way, the new edition will NOT be reverse compatible with anything you already own so... A PH, A DMG, and just one of the 40 or so Monster Manuals we will be releasing... that's $120... plus in order to play (because we have made face-to-face play obsolete), you will need to sign up for our on-line playing service at $19.95 a month...."

I saw this coming when they went from 2nd to 3rd... Noone listened to me then, and I doubt they are going to listen to me now...

I honestly think that people are going to rebel. Not to mention that there's a perfectly good online-table-top gaming program out there already(Fantasy Grounds).

Peopel are sheep and most will buy it up, if for no other reason than to keep themselves in the rpg pool when looking for gaming groups.

I have turned my back on WOTC/Hasbro a while ago but it is remarkably hard to proselytize other gaming systems to people who believe it is D&D or nothing...

WOTC jumped the shark with Eberron if you ask me.

What?? I think Eberron was one of the few things they did right. Finally it was a campaign that made sense really. I mean if you have a large number of wizards/casters in a world why wouldn't they eventually use it to help society? Most campaigns stay in the "dark ages" despite magic being everywhere. Don't get me wrong I love Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, etc. I don't plan to upgrade myself. My group likes 3.5 so I don't think I'll have a problem with finding someone to play with.

I agree that WoTC are gotten far too greedy for their own good and I don't plan to update, but let's be honest about it: from what I've read "plus in order to play (because we have made face-to-face play obsolete), you will need to sign up for our on-line playing service at $19.95 a month...." is blatantly untrue. It is a "directors edition" as they describe it. It will not be needed to play nor will it be 19.95 a month. If even on the off chance that I'm so blown away by 4th ed when I check it out at release (highly unlikely) , I will definitely not be buying that part. From what I've seen on the forums, those that spent a lot of money on 3.5 are very angry. There is a lot of backlash on the boards there.

Now I won't feel bad when I illegally download all of their books. Not that I did anyway. Third edition was a major improvement, but 3.5 was simple greed. All of the "improvements" could have been put in a web enhancement. A small one.

    I'll just wait 3 years for the 4.5 rules...haha j/k!

WoTC has finally gotten too greedy for their own good. I've been playing 3rd ed. since shortly after it came out. I've seen alot of crap roll off their presses since then (with a little bit of good stuff here and there). Now only 4 years after updating to 3.5 they say "here's 4th edition!! It will be awesome!" No thanks. It sounds like they are fixing the "problems" with 3/3.5. Any good DM has already done this. I guess I will have to become the new version of you 2nd edition holder-oners. I for one refuse to update again!

        I second that.

I figured out early that 3.5 was coming soon after 3rd edition came out -- I thus waited until 3.5 came out buy my books (and I was still playing WoD at that time).

I'm going to have a wait and see attitude with this edition as well...

3.5 only seems to work in computer games (NWN, etc.). 1st and 2nd are where it's at. Now it's a blatant money-machine.

              Money machine.

That's what I was telling people when 3rd Ed came out. Honestly, I saw it coming when Hasbro scooped up Wizards of the Coast for a song. Hasbro's goal is not to make games or toys but to make money. Games are incidental. Third Ed, while it has its merits structurally, was Hasbro getting its money's worth out of a brand name that built up a solid reputation over 20 years.

Oh well. In the last few years, people have been giving me their 1st and 2nd ed books, and now I have a towering library of awesomeness that dates back over 30 years. Unfortunately, only 'advanced' players will have the skills to decipher these ancient tomes. I need to get one of those giant IKEA bookshelves just for RPG stuff. MUHUHUHahahahaha!!!

Honestly, the old 1st Edition modules are the best, and stand the test of time.

depends on whether or not you're interested in nineteen fifties style pulp swords and sorcery style play. 1st and 3rd each have their strengths. honestly, no worries about 4e, just wait and see what fixes they've made and then loot it for what you like. as the gentlemen above were saying that's what plenty of folks did for the 3.5 conversion. also, since d20 is open source- you probably won't even have to pirate it illegally. honestly- buying a thousand resource books is for kids and tech millionaires. i've been running a campaign with one book- a used d20 modern book that i bought for the trade unit system.

Well, that seems interesting to an extent. I still expect people to have a D&D room, a large round table, dice rolled by hand, dungeon master screens for secrecy, side rooms for one on one role playing if isolated from party, players with pen and paper skill, and a DM with a story telling voice. Maybe I'm behind on things. I'll have to look more at this link later.

I FOUND THIS ON THE WoTC SITE. IT'S HILARIOUS!!

Default Reasons why or why not to update to 4e
      Hail adventurer!

First just a little about me. I have been playing D&D for 48 years and have been posting on these forums for 30 of those.

With the announcement of 4th edition, I've seen many differing opinions about its impact on the game (for good or ill) and wondered how "I" could help.

The list below tackles many topics, and serves to either substantiate or quash many of the rumors regarding 4th edition.

      I. My 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 3.5...-ith editions of Dungeons & Dragons will become obsolete.

      A. The Tuesday before 4th edition is released, just as the moon is rising, a message emanating from the “hivemind” at WotC will implore strategically placed “cranium rats” to chew the bindings of all OOP materials. Unconfirmed

      B. The ACME disappearing ink that all older editions of Dungeons & Dragons was printed with will activate two hours after 4th edition is released. Unconfirmed

II. You got MMO in my D&D.

      A. Existing kitchen table configurations are rumored to not meet 4th edition minimum system requirements, requiring expensive IKEA equipment upgrades. Unconfirmed

      B. I will be forced to spend $64.99 for 1000 Gp on Ebay from WotC “goldfarmers” to buy in-game items (example: +1 longsword = $150.41). Unconfirmed

      C. If I leave the table to get a slice\taquito\mountain dew, I will be forced to sit in a queue before returning to the game. Unconfirmed

      D. Latency will cause me to accidentally cast flamestrike\fireball\invisibility to inanimate-objects on fellow PCs or “trustworthy” NPCs. Unconfirmed

      E. 4th edition will require a laptop to play it. A laptop is like a brazillion dollars!!! This, on top of the new core books, barely leaves me enough money for personal care items like Axe Bodyspray and roofies. Unconfirmed

III. Paying a monthly fee for the extra content in DI is unfair.

      A. DI content will NOT be free (unlike Dungeon and Dragon magazines) Unconfirmed

      B. WotC will intentionally leave content out of their books (9-page prestige class descriptions, accurate stat-blocks, perfume ads) and make it only available to DI subscribers. Unconfirmed

      C. WotC Executives will steal my credit card information to buy “icy grills” and “spinners”. Unconfirmed

      D. Entering the barcode from my printed supplement into DI will forward my information to the Numerical Encrypted Roleplayers Database controlled by WotC, the FBI, and the Girl Scouts. Unconfirmed

III.V. The increasingly large amount of small miniatures will no longer be useful.

      A. Nearing the end of their planned systemic obsolescence, miniatures will chip, break, spontaneously burst in flames, or any combination of the former revealing they were really “plastic-plated” 25mm overstock unpainted lead Chainmail miniatures all along. Unconfirmed

      B. 4th edition miniatures will have hexagonal bases to allow for NEW mechanics like: facing, 1/7 cover, backstab, horsemanship, phasing, and cumulative upkeep. Unconfirmed

IV. Older editions will not be compatible or easily converted like 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd were.

      A. Are they removing gnomes from the PHB? I knew a guy who saw a guy play a gnome once. Unconfirmed

      B. I want some ORIGINAL races added to the core, like: Garden Gnomes, Inanimate Objects, Intelligent Oozes, ¼ Half-Dragons, and Renegade Drow! Unconfirmed

C.5. I want some ORIGINAL classes added to the core, like: Unrestricted-Alignment-Ninja, Non-magical Bards, Super-Saiyan-Sages, and Anti- Anti-Paladins. Unconfirmed

      D. Greyhawk will longer be the core setting and instead will be replaced with DarkGrey-ForgottenHollow-RavenJammer-MystraLance-BerronScape-Tur. Unconfirmed

      E. Will the information in the 7,243 Forgotten Realms supplements I own be deemed uncannon? Unconfirmed

      F. Will useful character-building skills like Spellcraft, Profession: Underwater Basketweaver, and Craft: Macaroni & Cheese still be viable? Unconfirmed

      V. Miscellaneous, Potpourri, and Other Stuff, Etcetera, Etcetera, Etcetera, Dot, Dot, Dot.

      A. I heard 4th edition will use the d21.5 system. Will OOP dice still be useful (weapon damage, needless haggling, getting-drunk-checks)? Unconfirmed

      B. When will we know whether existing versions of Mountain Dew will be compatible with 4th edition, or are we expected to repeat the Shasta Moon-Mist to Mellow-Yellow “incident” when 2nd edition was released? Unconfirmed

      C. Will various forum members continue to make tired threats of quitting or boycotting and unfounded accusations regarding a new system that, not only was just announced, but gives little detail to compare with or base their accusations on? CONFIRMED

THIS IS MY ADDITION TO THE 4TH EDITION THREAD ON WIZARDS.COM BOARD, THOUGHT YOU GUYS MIGHT ENJOY IT

Wizards of the Coast is proud to announce that we will be merging with Microsoft in Jan. 2008 to form Wizardsoft! This will allow us to do a few things with 4th edition we were unable to do before:

Firstly, in order to access the D&D insider content you will need to be running the latest version of Windows Vista. In addition the first time you access DDI it will scan your hard drive purging it of any unwanted previous edition materials. It will also block your internet explorer from going to sites with any "unofficial" D&D material! Your welcome.

Now we know D&D isn't about computers, it's about gaming with your friends in real life! We have several exciting ideas in that realm as well.

~Have you ever sat down at the beginning of a campaign to make characters and have less Player's Handbooks than players? We will solve this dilemma by implanting microchips in people as they buy 4th edition. You must have one of these chips to access the books! Any person attempting to peruse a 4th edition book without a microchip will be given a warning in the form of a loud beep. If that person does not drop or step away from the book in 5 seconds they will receive a small jolt of electricity from a device integrated into the books.
This will cause that broke, lazy player in your group to have to fork out the money for a book or leave your group! Problem solved.

Please check back with us often as we release more about the upcoming Cashcow that is 4th edition!!

        {DISCLAIMER: This posting has bits of inaccurate information in it, in other words it is all completely made up.}
