Need new character to keep my interest

topic posted Tue, January 20, 2004 - 7:19 AM by  Ian
I'm a newbie. I have been playing DnD for a few weeks and I'm in need of a couple new characters. Anyone have any ideas? I need two new characters; Geomancer, Dragon Disciple, Druid, or Bard. Very interested in the first two. I was gonna go for the druid or bard for the purpose of healing. Races for any classes listed or contributed? Up to now I've played the following: Rogue/Assassin, Sorceror, Drunken Master - was created and died the same day :(, and Samurai.

I started to play a winged half-elf sorceror(Avariel)...with the intention of becoming a Dragon Disciple. The two seemed to go hand in hand. As far as healing...stock up on potions, of course that is hard to do when you don't have any money in the beginning.

Still, I got her up to 5th level sorceror/1st level dragon disciple with not too many troubles. But, she is put aside in a folder. Our group hasn't played in many months...and the kids decided to start a new campaign ALL dwarves.

3.5 editon of the game gives the druid & bard more skills/feats/options. Which edition of the game do you play? I prefer 3.0. I did play AD& D once in the early 1980's. Now, we play D & D with friends and family (my 14 year old son is beginning to DM on his own.)

    Good luck!

We play 3.5 mostly but we customize rules. We have many of the accesory books: 3 from Forgotten Realms, Complete Warrior, etc. Do you think a melee geared Dragon Disciple would work? I'm leaning towards a bard vs. a druid as a supporting char.

The Dragon Disciple needs to be able to cast arcane spells without preparation, so a melee geared fighter wouldn't work. I only have the info on Dragon Disciple from Tome & Blood, the guidebook for wizards and sorcerers. It sure is an interesting prestige class, though.

Not sure how you were creating new characters at level as Geomancer or Dragon Disciple as these are prestige classes. I'm assuming your DM allowed you guys to create higher level characters that could meet the requirements. On choosing a class, perhaps the DM can guide you; he should have a vision for the campaign world. For instance, if I plan to use a lot of undead, I tell the PCs to make sure there's a cleric in the party; planar travel, arcane spellcasters.

Melee D.D. works if you choose a race that suffers no strength penalties (a biggie at low levels, less of a problem at high levels). You still have to meet the pre-reqs for sponstaneous casting as well.

        Cheers.

    Ian,

I recommend that all new players start off playing fighters. It's a basic class that affords a lot of time to see what the game is about.

For those that think fighters can't do anything or that they're boring: "you're high"

In the beginning keep it simple. You'll have plenty of time to get more complex, complicated and jumbled later.

I was offered a GM spot, at a TT group I'd been eyeing for a while; told the group (of four) in advance, "If I'm doing new players, I'd prefer all fighters, ECL 2, one Cleric, or Bard."

I arrive, and find three Forsakers and a Cleric of War/Healing (Ethos Cleric; domains over deities).

Okie-dokie, I thought. I throw them up against some CR 2-3s, and see the bloodbaths they make of those; so far, no one's permanently lost so much as some hair, they're so vicious.

I get a copy of the book they built the Forsakers out of, and lo and behold, I find some unfortunate things out:
1.) any human fighter can be one, after 1st level.
      2.) they are killing machines.
3.) the cleric doesn't need to select a deity, just an ethos.
4.) I need to find a CR 8 dragon in a hurry; they made 4th.

Two hours later, I'm doling out the XP and goodies from the *two* CR 7 dragons I tossed their way; the fight took less time than a cigarette break (my co-DM took over the combat, and greeted me with 'they killed them both, dude' before I'd finished my cigarette).

Never again did I doubt the power of just an ECL2 fighter group.

The secret to an interesting character isn't powers or scores or dice or whatever... it's character. The point (more or less) of these games is to make a story, so give this guy a history, or a personality, or a themesong, or something. If you're just playing hir as a set of numbers, you may as well be wargaming.

Then again, if the rate you've been going through chacters is typical, maybe they don't live long enough to be interesting. It's always a little awkward to write 3 pages of backstory for your halfling noble and then watch him fall down a pit an break his neck the first adventure.

I agree with the anterior point of view. A dragon disciple is a good thing, but a human boy that uses his magic gifts to survive and helps his friends, and slowly learns the truth of his mysterious ancestors, is more fun than a combat oriented dragon disciple...
I am not criticising you play style, but a deep character is sometimes more fun than a powerful one. I won't bore you with stories of "how my interesting character gave me fun". But the main difference is that an interesting, deep character gives more fun than a killing machine. I am a min/maxer at hearth (playing a gray orc/druid) but the fun si not how much orcs i can kill (humans in this case) but if i enjoy playing that character...
