Nowadays, old D&D games are hard to find. I myself, have lost interest. Strangley, computer games cannot offer the possibilities of a good ( or even the lame) dungeonmaster, and yet PC games- mmorpg's and others, have taken the place of original D&D in at least 99% of gamers.
I like some of the Sword and Sorcery games out there, but they just can't compete with the creativity of the human mind. I miss the days of sitting around the table and knocking back a few bong hits ( of which time and tide has compelled me to no longer indulge) and a few ice cold Tall Toads, whilst arguing as to wether this or that feat could be attempted. I withered away decades at this- but was it a waste? It forced me to read ( more, I was always a reader), forced me to become better, mostly quicker at math, and opened my mind to all sorts of possibilities. No computer game can do that. In the old days, many progammers thought the compuer could do this or that for D&D. How little did they know.
I miss D&D. The computer killed Dungeons and Dragons.

The bookends to Dungeons and Dragons have entered the great hereafter with the passing of Dave Arneson, following Gary Gygax's own death in March of 2008. Though influential to role-playing games on a level few could dream of, Arneson is almost an unsung legend. There's a lot of "unknown" surrounding who contributed what to our beloved Dungeons & Dragons, and it would appear that Gary and Dave had a falling out or two over their careers (though they were reportedly on good terms in the end). Dave was, by many accounts, humble and soft-spoken, never getting as much fame as his co-creator did. Even now, with all of the tributes for his memory, I'm not seeing as much grandeur attached to his name as to Gygax when he passed. Dave didn't get a heartfelt mention on NPR, and the news stories about him mostly call him a "co-creator" as opposed to titles like "father of D&D" or "the dungeon master" that were attached to his colleague.

I'm not saying that Gygax didn't deserve the farewell he received, not at all. I just think Dave Arneson was at least as worthy of our thanks and admiration for all he created and what he helped to build. I hope he's remembered fondly this year, and I'll have to pull out my old copy of "Blackmoor..."

This actually consists of 3 separate sites on which you can find many of the same people. (I'm there and other gaming sites as Snargash Moonclaw.) All of them are friendly, helpful, thoughtful and most of all, exceptionally useful and informative. Little in the way of egos, pissing contests, and still less, flamewars among the members - those just beginning are as welcome, respected, valued and listened to (i.e., hugely and effectively encouraged) as those with years of (even professional) experience in the areas of interest the sites focus on. All are guildhalls chartered by the gods of Geek Heaven (which means, among other things, there are no dues for membership, only benefits) and I simply can't recommend them highly enough. And no, I am not part of the admin, etc. of any of them.

These days I have a browser tab constantly open to The Campaign Builder's Guild, ( http://www.thecbg.org/ ). "The Campaign Builders' Guild (CBG) is your one-stop source for information and communities centered around building and creating campaign settings and worlds for role playing games. World and campaign building is a craft, an art, and goes far beyond simply creating locales, NPCs, and adventure locations. At the CBG, we will help you achieve a mastery of this art, either through reviewing your campaign setting, critiquing your adventure, or simply basking in the wonder of your campaign world." The members are helpful, thoughtful, creative and many bring decades of experience to the forums. The site also hosts a wiki in which many of us share our settings in a comprehensive manner (while you'll find portions, especially WiP, scattered throughout the forums for discussion and feedback) - my own is Panisadore (I'm listed in the wiki as SillyFaerie). Some also run PbP games set in their worlds through the forums.

Closely related (and sometimes overlapping a little) is ( http://www.plotstorming.com/ ) "PlotStorming.com - A site dedicated to writers, role playing gamers, and fans who enjoy any genre of fiction." Setting material, adventures, and fiction in general is shared and thoughtfully critiqued here (and they offer Story Hooks of the Day and frequent short story contests) - one of the friendliest and most *constructive* writer's groups/forums/sites on the web.

Finally, the most specifically and technically focused, ( http://www.cartographersguild.com/ ) "Cartographers'Guild.com - A community for cartography enthusiasts. Professional cartographers and hobbyists alike dwell here, so if you need advice on a map, this is the place to go." Their blurb doesn't scratch the surface of this goldmine nor does the site's intro, "The Cartographers’ Guild is a forum created by and for map makers and aficionados, a place where every aspect of cartography can be admired, examined, learned, and discussed. Our membership consists of professional designers and artists, hobbyists, and amateurs—all are welcome to join and participate in the quest for cartographic skill and knowledge.

Although we specialize in maps of fictional realms, as commonly used in both novels and games (both tabletop and role-playing), many Guild members are also proficient in historical and contemporary maps. Likewise, we specialize in computer-assisted cartography (such as with GIMP, Adobe apps, Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, etc.), although many members here also have interest in maps drafted by hand.

The Cartographers' Guild is a friendly, open community, welcoming to everyone who pursues cartographic excellence. We love to share our maps, to help one another improve our maps, and to pool our mapping resources."

Full reviews, comparisons, sources for downloading or purchasing, as well as awesome, in-depth and comprehensive tutorials in actually *using* virtually any mapping program available as freeware, shareware or market purchase as well as creating and/or modifying and enhancing maps with many other useful graphics programs such as Photoshop and The Gimp.

Finally, outside of the alliance but frequented by many members a new site worth the visit is Gnome Stew , The Game Mastering Blog, ( http://www.gnomestew.com/ ) "a blog about tabletop RPG game mastering, written by GMs, for GMs. We think about GMing in every waking moment (okay, GMing and hot, hot gnome sex meals), so we figured we’d put our obsession to good use.

Here on the Stew, it’s all game mastering, all the time, from system-neutral GMing advice and ideas to system-specific suggestions to help make running your games easier and more fun.
4th Edition is for Internet gaming.

It is basically D&D molded on World of Warcraft. . Everything is geared along the lines accommodating the online D&D Interactive. Now, I'll soon test out the rules with my group, but the departure in rules is to far to be called a true successor to the origional nature of the Table Top Game. It lacks the adaptivity that comes through direct person on person interaction.

There is going to be something of a rebellion with some Gamers like myself that preferred the Older Concepts. However, this edition is designed for internet play; the table top aspects of is secondary to that style of Gaming...

So, a member of my gaming group was able to locate a cobbled together version of what seems to be the basis of the 4e rulesset. Coupled with copies of the D&D experience character sheets, which we used instead of creating new characters, we gave it a whirl, knowing that we didn't have a final product and making judgement calls as needed to keep it playable.

Dammit, we liked it.

We of course mocked a number of rules semi-in character (Order of the Stick style) that seemed to make no sense on paper, but we used them anyway. The play experience was pretty easy to get a grip on and use. Some powers stacked with each other nicely so that even at 1st level, you can rip out a whammy based on two or even three powers combining on the same round. We went through a module supposedly designed for 4e, fought quite a few Kobolds, and almost lost our fighter twice. Mostly because the mobs would focus on one attacker at a time. Between having (fortunately) picked the cleric to come along, and the increase in survivability of a firstie, no one actually died. The cleric is a little weak on healing ability at first level, only being able to use his ranged healing twice per encounter, but that just forces you to plan your room clearing a bit better. I think overall having an incomplete description of the movement rules was the most notable absence, as we weren't quite clear on what we had as options in any round. As much as I really wanted to hate D&D, and still don't feel the rules set reflects a logical game world, it functions very well for playability. I would agree with the concerns that it seems like a MMORPG wargame or a mini combat game. Its *very* much reminiscent of that. Plus I loathe the "Harry Potter"esque 'wizards and warlocks must use a wand' concept presented on the character sheets. While I like the 'must use an implement' concept, I will not be forcing a wand in the hand of every firstie, if solely to avoid the inevitable outcries of "Expelliarmus" when combat starts. Spellcasting is much improved, in my estimation. Not running out of spells was a great thing.

Not crazy about what I see so far regarding the concepts of the races, classes or world, in fact I think that's the weakest point (very video gamey). That and it is fundamentally NOT D&D any more. That product is gone, as I suspected. This new thing is very different. Its a good product, but what you knew as D&D is now as departed as Mr Gygax, in my opinion. I choose to think he took it with him.

This was already posted on the SF Roleplayers tribe. I'm re-posting it here in case there's somone here who's not on the other tribe.

Intro: If you're looking for a game in the bay area, I would like to start one. As of now the group-yet-to-be is just my girlfriend and I (there's various pics of us in my profile and hers (tank) ), so I haven’t even written up a game yet. But if I get enough committed players, I will start us out with a short insto-adventure just to see how the group works together and we'll go from there.

About the game: The game will be a Third Edition (3.5) Dungeons &Dragons game with 4-6 players. It will be the basic fantasy setting for now, other options may happen in time depending on where it all goes. Like I said, nothing will be planned until I have enough players and the opportunity to 'feel each other out'. If you are unused to the system or a total noob, that's ok; I'm patient and usually more than happy to teach (if you are an experienced D&Der I'll probably ask you to help the noobs, too). Oh, and I'm not a role-playing Nazi, but at least try to act/talk in character in game.

About the location: My house in Fremont. We are close to BART and I can pick up people from there. If you don't live close enough BART to take it, I am willing to give free rides if you are pretty close. If you are far away, you pay gas and tolls (where applicable).

About you: Please be mature(ish), 18+ only (not that I'm doing a pornographic adventure or anything, I just don't want any liabilities). Exceptions can happen if you are bringing some younger into the game, but we'd (the group) have to meet them first and take a vote (majority wins, but DM can overrule majority is sees fit). Be honest and respectful; I shouldn't have to say this, but don't cheat or steal (out of game). I'm inviting you into my home and would like you to behave. NO RULES LAWYERS. I think that one is self explanatory. And on that note: be kinda laid-back. We're casual people, so try not to be uptight. Also, like a job, I don't care what you do at home, but please be sober at the game. Some drug (this includes alcohol) consumption is ok if you want, but please be functional and relatively focused. That also means, we don't care what activities, religious affiliation, or whatever you have, but leave them at home. Oh, and a good sense of humor. We tell a lot of jokes, but you need understand that they're just jokes.

About us: My girlfriend and I are 21 and 23 respectively, we're laid-back (sometimes down-right silly) people. We don't judge anything or anybody; we don't care if you're a big, gay hermaphrodite with a flock of seagulls haircut and only one nostril. Seriously, we don't care. We have lives outside of gaming (school, work, a whole network of friends and activities), so if you want to do something other than gaming (on a non-game night), that's fine if not encouraged. And a final note: I promise we will not be disgustingly couply while gaming. We abide by all the rules you do.

Dates and times: The only available times are as follows: Friday nights/evening. Saturday and Sunday have availability for the whole day. Monday nights/evening may work, too but can't run too late on that day. If NONE of those work for you, let us know and we'll see what we can do. BTW - These are just projections; I am in between jobs right now so stuff may change.

SO, if interested or if you have questions please PM me. You got that? Send me a PERSONAL MESSAGE as I do not make a good habit of logging on to tribe and checking threads. tribe.net sends pms directly to my e-mail inbox (which I check about twice daily).

Greetings once again, admirals of the arcane! It is I, Zombie Dan, your tireless sherpa through the precarious mountain pass of the mind, leading you unerringly to the fabled and ageless D&D Minis community at Gamescape North. It's been such a hectic season for those of us dedicated to fun and frolic. Though crazy weather has beaten at our shutters and sent us scurrying for higher ground, we were able to gather up our "little guys" in time and put them in a buoyant toy boat. If you get bored, try saying that five times fast. I'm never bored, of course. What with all the shadowy and eldritch…things scurrying around my kitchen floor making those awful chittering sounds, I've been busy as a baatezu with my hammer and spatula, making hors d'--uvres for National Henchman Appreciation Day. Oh, how my kobold lackeys will be surprised when they see the delightful spread of chitin, green ichor and spindly legs, arranged on a bronze buckler for easy consumption. All their hard work will be recognized, when for an entire hour, they will set down their pickaxes and be encouraged to shove hideous and unnameable treats into their greedy little gullets. Kill two birds with one stone, I say…

Speaking of stones, there have been some unusual goings-on over at the old temple ruins. Strange noises in the night, pets going missing and whatnot. Which leads us to the subject of this month's game. Some things are best left buried in the sands, they say. But try telling that to Blue, my old hunting worg. He just can't leave well enough alone. You oughta see what he left on my porch yesterday. Anyway, Saturday, Jan. 26, come on down to Gamescape North for this month's Minis showdown: "Mum's the Word!":

*************************************************************************************************************************************

It seemed like the perfect crime. The legend of the priest-king's treasure had lived on for centuries, though some of the details had been lost in translation so as not to scare the kiddies. Like the curse the priest-king had laid upon his own tomb, as he lay dying from the scorpion's sting. And the unstoppable tomb guardians, who could only be defeated by-

Never mind all that, the high inquisitor thought, his torch sending flickers of light into masonry which had lain wreathed in darkness for centuries. Ancient tales of blasphemy to guard the heathen treasures from raiders. If the priest-kings had any power, their temple would not be in ruins today. Truly, his deity would protect him from any minor spirits which lingered in this tomb. Vast treasures awaited him, which he could use to build his own temple, and even raise a proper army with which to cleanse this land. Not this motley gang of adventurers and freebooters. He cast an annoyed glance behind him, where the vampire hunter stood nervously whittling backup stakes.

"C'mon then, put down that silly twig and help me break through this stone," he called out. "We must purge this place of evil."

"Right," the hunter said, somewhat coldly. "If by 'evil' you mean your pursuit of loot. Hey dwarf!"

"Aye, what is it now," grumbled the dwarven artificer, slumping against a slab of rune-covered sandstone, his grubby fingers around an oversized flagon of dwarf spirits. "How can I help you tyrants t' further defile me ancestors' restin' place?"

"The boss wishes to break through this ancient stonework. Activate the hammerer!"

"You heartless, greedy humans. Why, this stonework is masterful, simply masterful," the dwarf said, tears falling into a beard caked with dust. Sighing, he leaned behind the steel construct he'd leased to the inquisitor, and turned a small gold key three times. Immediately, the gears within began clicking. The giant steel hammer at the end of its primary arm began slamming furiously into the tightly fitted stone, breaking into dust masonry which had been ancient when the humans had still been living in caves hurling rocks at each other.

"Yesssss," the inquisitor cooed, rubbing his hands together in anticipation. The vampire hunter covered his ears, shielding his unnaturally keen hearing from the deafening crash of the ancient stone being pulverized by modern contraptions. This would be the last tomb job, he promised himself.

Finally, it was over. The hammerer stepped forward through the gaping hole it had created, disappearing into the darkness of the tomb. The inquisitor's curiosity had gotten the best of him, and he leaned forward into the cloud of dust and blackness. "Finally, the treasure of the ancients," he whispered. "With the fabled Scarab Crown upon my brow, I will be unsto-AAIIIIEEEEE!!!" His screams became muffled and choked as a petrified, bandaged hand shot into his mouth, pulling him by the tongue into the forbidden tomb…

******************************************************************************************************************************************

That's right, we're going tomb raiding! Saturday, Jan. 26, come on down to Gamescape North for Mum's the Word, a minis adventure guaranteed to put the swash in your buckle. Put together an adventuring warband of 150 points with which to explore the sandy tombs. Unearth fantastic treasures and magic items, horrific curses, and face down terrifying guardians who will scare you out of your fedora! The game starts at 1 p.m. sharp, so show up early if you need some help putting your warband together, or just look over the merchandise and size up the competition. I'll be there at noon, sipping coffee and translating forgotten tomes back into Esperanto.

Van Richten started to explore the land I believe and study the worst cases he could find, such as, eating a brain can cause zombism, things like this. Is Van Richten still around in 3.5?

It gave a bonus to reaction modifiers. Like, if a fine boned gnome suprised a hobgoblin it might be less likley to hack if the gnome had good posture and long eyelashes. Charisma is still important, the ability to see points of views other than one's own and represent class and party. In game mechanics, this also led to a bonus for reaction modifiers. Is a comliness score only realistic in a less arms and armor campaign? Is penciling in character description a more sound way to approach comliness? I used comliness on my custom D&D character sheets and I noticed the discrepancy that PC's threw their lowest die roll to comliness. 8's and such. Thoughts on comliness?

Parents obsessed with playing Dungeons & Dragons, leave babies to starve

They were too busy playing video games

By Dan Freeman, GameRush Entertainment

Posted July 15, 2007
U.S. authorities say a couple from Reno, Nevada was so obsessed with playing video games online that they left their babies to starve.
According to the Sunday Telegraph, the parents have now pleaded guilty to child neglect after their 22-month-old boy and 11-month-old girl were found severely malnourished and close to death.

The girl, weighing just 10 pounds, reportedly had to have her head shaved because it was matted with cat urine. She also suffered from a mouth infection, dry skin, and severe dehydration. Her brother was treated for starvation, a genital infection, and, due to lack of muscle development, difficulty walking.

The children are now doing well and regaining weight in foster care. Their parents, Michael Straw, 25, and Iana Straw, 23, now face up to 12 years in prison. Prosecutors say the couple was too distracted playing Dungeons & Dragons online to give their children proper care.

“They had food, they just chose not to give it to their kids because they were too busy playing video games,” said Kelli Ann Viloria, a public prosecutor.

Straw is an unemployed cashier and his wife does warehouse work for a staffing agency. The couple reportedly spent a $50,000 inheritance on computer equipment and a plasma television.

We are looking for one or two more players in a weekly D&D game that meets Wednesday nights in Berkeley, typically from 7 to 10. The day and time can be potentially changed to accomodate people's schedules. Currently we are playing 14th level characters in an Arcana Evolved campaign, and people are welcome to jump in at 14th level if they want. I would describe it as a classic campaign--adventurers exploring ruins and trying to save the village/kingdom from a variety of sinister plots. However, we will be starting a new Iron Kingdoms campaign (at 1st level) in the near future. This will be a city-based campaign that will focus on crime and personal goals.

We are mostly experienced gamers in our thirties and appreciate good roleplaying. We've played many other RPGs but for most of us D&D has always been "the" game or has lured us back with the improvements in the 3rd and 3.5 editions. Generally our style of play balances interactive storytelling and combat. My friend and I trade off running the game, and prefer a cooperative style where players can improvise, propose plot twists, help interpret confusing rules, etc. We generally don't get along with players who like to exploit the rules and consider anything they can get away with to be fair. I can provide more information about either campaign, although meeting and seeing if we get along is probably a more important first step. If you are interested or want more details, send me a message or reply to this post.

My guess is that it is rare, worth 3,000 gold or something. With practice, one can scale vertically without leaving a mark. I guess leaning into it and using arms and legs perfect would be how its done. Pitched roofs would be near impossible to get up on for it would seem the thief could not let go of any weight or motion. I used to think climb walls was something like jump up and get a hand hold or scramble for some grab or pole or something. The climbing claw thing seems more interesting. More shadows to hide in way up high I guess. Any climbing claw rules?

It seems like some 18th level from the bottom of his heart, may get weary one night drinking ale in some relatively peaceful territory and fade into 0 level and if he began adventuring, he would choose another class. If another class, I would let the character keep proficiencies, feats, and ability scores, but not hit points and level. Is the retirement thing a tendency of humans? Maybe other monsters insisted things keep rocking steady.

When President Bush ordered troops to Iraq, he probably never imagined that he would be ultimately be responsible for what very well could be the very first D&D convention/game day ever held in a war zone. Ziggurat Con, being held June 9 from 1200 to 2100 hours at Camp Adder/Tallil Airbase, is open to all allied military personnel and civilian contractors in Iraq.

KBR and MWR (the army’s Morale Welfare & Recreation Department) have graciously allowed service members to use part of the Community Activity Center to hold the Game Day. The Ping Pong room will be set up for RPGs (Role-Playing Games, not to be confused with the rocket propelled grenades which share the same acronym), and the DVD Movie room will be playing Anime Movies all day in support of the event.

The largest problem with running a Con in Iraq, of course, is that there are no local stores or game publishers, and few game books on the post. Even dice are in short supply, with many soldiers breaking the unwritten taboo held by many gamers and sharing dice. Thankfully, many game publishers have also lent their support, and have agreed to supply game products to help the Con along. aethereal FORGE, Sovereign Press, Final Redoubt Press, Goodman Games, Paizo Publishing and Steve Jackson Games are among those that have thrown in their support for the convention. But Amberson indicated that the soldiers could definitely use more.

"This convention is currently in drastic need of prizes and giveaways for the troops," he said. "Everything donated will go directly to the troops, or to MWR to use as loaner books for the soldiers."

For more information, contact SPC David Amberson at the following address: david.amberson (at) iraq.centcom.mil

Donations can also be sent to SPC Amberson directly at the following address:

A Co 86th Sig Bn
APO, AE 09331

They’re planning to run the following games (and will be happy to get additional games):
Babylon 5 RPG, Cyberpunk 2020, D&D, D&D RPGA, GURPS, Historic Miniatures Battles, Magic Tournament, MechWarrior Miniatures, Rifts, Shadowrun, Starship Troopers, White Wolf System-Vampire, White Wolf System-Werewolf, XCrawl

Got any game books crowding your shelves that you never use? Here's a great cause to donate them to. Spread the word.

We would love anything we can get. We do have a White Wolf game here, but not much in the line of books, mostly the older editions. We will have a small LARP game that we are trying to get permission to have happen at the Ziggurat for which the con is named (A LARP at a historical site that has been around since Biblical times - WOW). Gamer related material would be absolutely awesome!! It takes 2 weeks or less when shipping Priority, so you still have time.

I had such odd luck with dice once (to the tune of seven critical misses in a row) that my Dm had to invent a whole critical miss mishap chart to come up with interesting things to avoid getting repetitive.

I was dm'ing, and I had a dwarf who was standing on the bed to overcome a height issue, fall into a chest, and the elf he was with accidentally knocked into and locked him in. It was hilariously funny, especially when the thief coudln't get him out, and they had to give up and get help, carrying the dwarf back to town and trying to find a locksmith.

We had a soda mishap, one of the guys worked for a small mom and pop grocery store that has overordered a not so popular flavor of soda, so let him take a large amount of flats of the stuff home. He brought it to the game, and we stacked them in the back mudroom, not realizing the ac didn't go that far. Mid game, there were some very loud explosions, and a rivver of fizzz oozing under the door into the kitchen.

Hey all-

For those of you in the Bay Area who are into D&D Minis, I'm running regular DDM games at Gamescape in San Rafael. Next one is April 21. Below is the writeup. Come on down!

*********************************************

Greetings, miniature masters! Dan here, Gamescape North's ambassador to the DDM community. Prime Miniature, if you like. I just crawled out of my tiny plastic coffin, and thought I'd let you all know we'll be running yet another DDM event Saturday April 19.

Last month was an action-packed 2-player "Castlevania-core" dungeon crawl featuring the intrepid vampire hunter Van Richten, hunting down infamous bloodsucker Strahd. In his own castle! How rude. We really pressed our undead collections to the limit, and the 1000+ pt. battle raged until closing time.

Continuing with our DDM salute to classic video games, this month's featured event is called "Throwin' Down the Gauntlet":

>>>Don't start what you can't finish. That's the first lesson they teach you at Wizard State. But someone has forgotten their lessons, and left open the gate to the Abyss. And in the Abyss, people keep their doors locked for a reason.

Dark forces squeeze through even darker portals, slaughtering good and evil alike. They have come to reclaim this world for their own. The Emperor will reward anyone who can close the gates and save the populace. Treasure-hungry adventurers have flocked to the now-defiled Wizard's Castle, even brawling with each other for the chance at fame and fortune. Oh, did we mention there's a princess?<<<

Don't shoot the food!

200-point warbands (no Epic, no undead commanders)
Gametime: Saturday, April 21, 1:00 p.m. (try to be there by 12:30)

@ Gamescape North
1225 4th St. San Rafael, CA 94901
(415) 457-8698.

We will have an alternate scenario for any overflow, so everyone gets to play, folks. If you don't have minis of your own, come on down anyway. You can take mine for a test drive.

My question is: how do you DM's out there adjudicate being blind especially when using a battlemat and minis. It's very hard not to meta-game in this type of situation. Surprisingly I've never run into this. I made the players make listen checks to move toward the hobgoblins they were fighting. Of course the miss chance hurt them even if they did find the enemy. Anyway, any tips or info is appreciated. :)

Oh, and a heads up, because of an odd work schedule Sundays, Mondays (I think), and Saturdays (being my single, solitary day off with my girlfriend) don't work for me (exceptions might be able to be made if one of those are the only options). Every other day after 5:00 PM is OK though. Just let me know if interested and what works

It was a sequence the characters had to do to win. I think wizard charms the dragon so it will lower its head and take a close look, warrior softens it up with a few hits, rouge lands a perfect critical hit, something close to that. Hide behing things when breath weapon is employed. In your games, as players or DM's did much thought go into descriptions when the monster your rolling dice against is of an enormous size in comparison to the party? Or is that just for the imagination? I suppose in a mythical D&D land, training would have in mind sizes huge and up.

Thanks to Chase's website listing for critical hit charts, it inspired me to post a link to the existing critical hit charts that I use in my games. These rules are setup for 3.5, but can easily be modified for earlier versions.

To get a extended critical hit, both the first roll and the second roll (the normal roll to confirm a critical threat) on the d20 must be a natural 20 (thus on average 1 out of 400 times you'll get one). You then roll on the charts below to determine the effect. There is about a 30% chance you'll notice that there is no special effect even then. On the other hand, if you roll higher the results get worse (any of the criticals after Regular Result use at least a x3 critical multiplier, replacing whatever multiplier the attack uses). Since targeted spell attacks can also get critical hits, these use the charts as well.

Fumbles are determined as follows. First any natural 1 on a d20 attack roll gives a potential fumble and ends any further attacks that round (for those who have multiple attack sequences). If a second d20 roll (reflecting confirming a fumble much like critical hits use) ends up being a hit, then there is no further result. If the second d20 roll ends up being a miss, then the character is flat-footed until his next turn. If (horror of horrors) the second d20 roll is a natural 1, then use the charts below to determine the effects (many of these effects can be negated or reduced by a good dexterity check).

These charts allow the potential for the occassional rare fatal strike or fatal fumble while not dominating play with too many rules. Further, these allow the concept of fumbles to balance out the special effects of criticals (not to mention rogues love it when their opponents fumble and end up flat-footed).

The Israeli Army knows this. And that's why every D&D enthusiast who joins the Israeli army is automatically given a low security clearance and viewed as unrealiable, subpar soldiers.

Israeli officials view a fondness for Dungeons and Dragons as being indicative of a delusional mind, RPGers are out of touch with reality. "The game indicates a weak personality," one security official said. "One of the tests we do, either by asking soldiers directly or through information provided us, is to ask whether they take part in the game," he added. "If a soldier answers in the affirmative, he is sent to a professional for an evaluation, usually a psychologist." Also, a strip club.

Anyone else get this one? It seems like the D&D books are running out of steam, interest-wise. I haven't heard much about the newer ones, very few people I know bothered with MM4, or have been doing much buying lately in general. I did buy Races of the Dragon, and Tome of Magic. Other than Complete Scoundrel (which I haven't heard much good about anywhere, tho I like it), I haven't seen much I really want to buy. I did get Dungeonscape though, and it does have quite a few good ideas (I thought) for dungeons, and creating whole themes, and interesting locations.

The Core class they add to the book, the Factotum, is an interesting concept, sort of a Jack of all Trades type, though, never having heard the word 'Factotum' before, I don't think it's much of a catchy title to inspire people to make one. '5th Level Factotum' just sounds kinda...wierd...

Anyway, a few good gadgety ideas for modifying weapons, better than past ideas (like those goofy alchemical capsule notions from whatever book that was), and some more armor and weapon powers. Mostly, it's a good book for inspiration, and one to buy if you have some bucks kicking around and need to get really psyched up before unleashing that uber-dungeon on your players. More good ideas on traps, and lots of ideas for DMs who struggle with how to build dungeons that PCs can't just walk over the top of. Otherwise, borrow from a friend, since it's not essential to anything. The factotum is really there just to be a catch-all class, perhaps that GM NPC or the one for the indecisive player. Largely, the bok present tons of workarounds for common problems between DMs, their players and the dungeon. It gave me some good ideas, but if you are quite creative, and get good reactions from your players, I'd say save your money.

Imagine for a second that you are a Hollywood director/producer...
Someone has given you an umlimited budget to produce a quality Dungeons & Dragons movie, but there is a catch. It MUST be based on a module that was in existance prior to 3rd edition...

Name the module you would use, and then using the modules guidelines, extrapolate the cast of characters and who you would have play the parts... again, there is no budget constraint, so have fun with it...

I will post my own choice after the first other person chooses their's... (I have to go dig out my modules and see what I would do, although just typing this has given me a couple of ideas...)
